Finished Soundscape and Artist Statement

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

For my final product of my soundscape piece I decided to use sounds that I found satisfying to the ear. My goal was for my audio to create a calming and relaxing effect through the usage of everyday sounds. Some of the sounds I chose consisted of; a lighter flicker, ice coffee, a 3DS, nature sounds (birds chirping and crickets), and a recording of an orchestra. In the process of creating this piece I decided to make the audio consistent throughout to emphasize the relaxing and satisfying effect, without a climax in the piece. I chose not to pursue a climax because of my inspiration by John Cage where he wanted to make music that went against tradtions of what society deems as “music”; it is common for music to follow a certain structure, a beginning, middle or climax, and an end or resolution. I wanted my piece to have a consistent flow without a specific structure to it, therefore no beginning, middle, or end. In my piece I repetitively used the lighter flicker and orchestra as a background to create a stable consistency in the piece. For example in some of my critiques often people stated how they wanted to hear more variety or that they were expecting something different/big. The point of this piece was not only to be satisfying but also to be unexpected; therefore why there was no beginning, climax, or resolution within the piece. I chose to do this out of inspiration from John Cage, challenging not only myself but what others deem as music due to stereotypical structuring of music. Overall although my piece may have not came out the way it was intended but I am pleased with the final product.
