Artist Statement:

In my zine project I aimed to communicate the positives of life and why those positives make life worth living. I chose the theme “Reasons Why You Should Stay” to speak to those who have endured / are experiencing mental health issues related to suicidal tendencies; I am one of those people, as are many people in my life. Suicide has been progressively increasing throughout time and has reach a concerning rate; 12.2 million adults have seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million adults have made a plan for suicide, and 1.2 million adults have attempted suicide in 2020, that is only the adult population not including adolescents. During my adolescence from 16 to 20 years of age, I experienced the loss of seven close friends due to suicide. My pain and suffering is what brought about the inspiration for this zine; I wanted to remind those undergoing the same pain that there are things worth staying alive for. Throughout my grief and healing journey I have learned that the little things make life worth living. The little things I chose to portray were; sunsets, food, scenic views, pets, connects (love, sex, passion), concerts, and above all, making it here today. Often in times of sadness one forgets to acknowledge and appreciate the things around us that are taken for granted due to the inability to see beyond one's own problems during trying times; I am guilty of this. Mental fog can cloud one’s judgments on an emotional level and physical level. For this project I focused mainly on daily life aspects. During the process of making this zine, I felt that it was important not only to visually represent but verbally express reasons to stay. In critiques I received feedback that implied that the text was “repetitive” and “unnecessary”, which I could see it being perceived as that. As a psychology major I have learned that repetition of a statement increases the degree of belief within that statement, therefore the repetition of “stay for…” was intentional to drive the point home in neural processes the brain undergoes unconsciously. As an artist I chose to keep the text intentionally even if it may seem “unnecessary” to some personal preferences. Overall the process of making this zine was fairly easy, the most challenging part was how I wanted to put my work all together. I decided to not follow the traditional zine folding style and instead created a miniature booklet; which I personally like better for the zine I created.
